Religion is like a knife. When it is used for the right purpose, it benefits mankind and the whole world. If it is used for wrong purpose, it brings strife, chaos, division, war and destruction. So what is the purpose of religion? Here what I have compiled on many different positive thoughts about religion.

1) Primary Purpose – Spiritual

  • to understand the “other” … be that other supernatural, subnatural, outerworld, inner self, afterlife, before life, or even things like weather phenomenon.
  • to answer questions about the nature of reality beyond the ability of science.

  • to help people understand the Divinity we should worship
  • to teach us what God is, and that no man has ever been, or will ever be, God.
  • to understand that the humans within the religion are “mortals” and are not higher nor equal with God.
  • to help human beings acknowledge the real God, the Omnipresent Great Spirit-Parent which loves us all.
  • to acknowledge the creator and to accept ethical and society values as spelled by the creator

  • to develop the right relationship with God, by changing yourself – your character
  • to develops a rudimentary communion with God through faith, invocation, worship rituals, singing, and prayer
  • to unite with God – to bring us close to God, to worship God and thank him for all of his beautiful creation.

2) Secondary Purpose – Social

  • to create a better world – society will be of higher quality and we will be better human beings
  • to live well.
  • to promote greater civilization
  • to carry forward an ever-advancing civilization
  • to stabilize a society, and perhaps help it grow.
  • to create a sense of social order.
  • to establish unity and concord amongst the peoples of the world; make it not the cause of dissension and strife.
  • to create peace and happiness into their lives.
  • to bring joy, harmony, and peace
  • to foster universal love and promote the general welfare and prosperity for all, and therefore produce unity, harmony, tranquility, and peace.
  • to teach us how to live in unified harmony, in peace, and in love with our fellow human beings on this planet.
  • to safeguard the interests and promote the unity of the human race, and to foster the spirit of love and fellowship amongst men.

3) Secondary Purpose – Personal

  • to promote the goodness in people.
  • to promote the learning and advancement of a people
  • to be better human beings – virtuous and moral human being
  • to build good morality that creates strong character
  • to exhort and develop a moral sense
  • to promote core universal spiritual values: unconditional love, peace, freedom, honesty, humility, tolerance, forgiveness, compassion, charity, and pacifism.
  • to produce the noble fruit: love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness and temperance.
  • to promote charity and acts of kindness towards the oppresses, needy and infirm
  • to encourage a spirit of goodwill and cooperation
  • to promote truth, faith, love, kindness, selfless giving, humility, gentle compassion, forgiveness, tolerance, and solidarity.
  • to teach us that the humble, gentle, loving, peaceful people in the world shall inherit the earth, and that we should treat all other human beings as we would want to be treated.
  • to love one another, cooperate and collaborate with one another, and work together to achieve common goals for the common good.
  • to make you, the believer, feel good and empowered.
  • to help us deal with our pain, suffering, and grief in ways that stop it from continuing to damage ourselves or others.
  • to help us learn to end the suffering within”
  • to change not only our thoughts but our acts

“Religion is regarded by common people as true, by wise as false and by rulers as useful.”
